Acupuncture is the process of inserting very thin needles in the skin at very specific points in order to alleviate pain and help heal certain illnesses and injuries.
Acupuncture is a very old medical treatment developed by the Chinese. It works on the principle that blocked energy in the body can cause illnesses and pain. The needles used in acupuncture are designed to release these blockages so that the energy in your body can flow freely.
Acupuncture has been proven effective in treating a variety of acute and chronic illnesses and injuries.
Acupuncture can be used alone or with other holistic and traditional treatment options. Sometimes an acupuncturist will also use electro-stimulation or heat along with the thin needles to heal reduce pain and facilitate total body healing.
Our acupuncturist will ask you several questions about your health and pain levels prior to starting a treatment. The answers to these questions will help determine where the needles will be inserted. The needles cannot be placed through clothing so you will likely be asked to raise or remove your shirt for the treatment.
Our acupuncturist will locate the points on your body that correspond with the pain that you are feeling and insert needles into those points. The points correspond with pathways or meridians where the energy flows. The needles may be placed at varying depths, depending on your specific needs.
Once all the needles are in place, they will be left in your skin for a specific length of time, usually between 15 and 60 minutes. During the treatment, you should feel relaxed. Some individuals feel tingling or warmth. This is considered an indication that the needles are working.
At the end of your treatment, the needles will be removed and the energy points will be closed. Our acupuncturist may give you additional at-home instructions for clearing more of the blocked energy between treatments.
Generally healthy individuals should only need a few treatments to clear mild back and neck pain. Individuals who have underlying conditions will need more treatments before their pain is completely gone.
There are virtually no side-effects from the acupuncture treatments. Some individuals may feel a little sore at the needle sites, but this should clear up within a day. Our acupuncturist always utilizes strict hygiene and only uses sterile, single use acupuncture needles.
Acupuncture can be used alongside other traditional and holistic medical treatments, including chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy and TENS. There are no drugs used with the acupuncture treatments. The treatments reduce pain naturally by clearing your body’s blocked energy and by releasing endorphins, which are the body’s way of naturally reducing pain.
